Why should we read Bhagvad Gita?

Bhagavad-Gita reveals the essence of all spiritual knowledge and this is the foremost reason why we should read Bhagvat Geeta!

Bhagavad Gita or the Song of the God or the Gitopanishad is the essence of Vedic knowledge. It is one of the most important extracts of Upanishads. Why is it called the ‘Song of God?’ Well, the fact is that it was spoken by the supreme, Lord Krishna in a rhyming manner. This rhyming is called ‘Anustup’ and contains 32 syllables in each verse when spoken softly. It was spoken just before the Mahabharata war on the holy land of Kurukshetra in 3137 B.C. Kaliyuga began after about 36 years of this war. It is basically the conversation between Lord Krishna and His friend and devotee Arjuna whereby He reminds Arjuna of the fact that one must do his duties without focusing on the consequences. To make Arjuna understand this, Krishna revealed the treasure of spiritual knowledge to the mankind. As said by Vivekananda, Gita was told in the battlefield but in the midst of it is the eternal calmness. Vivekananda further says, this is the central idea of the Gita- to be calm and steadfast in all circumstances, with one’s body, mind, and soul centered at His hallowed Feet!

Bhagwad Gita holds Solutions for Modern-day Problems

Philosophers have linked the battlefield of Kurukshetra to the battlefield that lies within all of us. Each day, every one of us encounter confusion, doubt, stress, anger, greed and so on. Arjuna was experiencing most of these issues when he stood in front of his uncles, brothers, friends and other relatives on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. How could he fight with his own people? This was a cause of confusion and stress for him, stopping him to perform his duties.

In today’s modern life, we too confront such situations when we need to take sides. We can either choose good or evil while performing our duties. Many a times, it happens that choosing good means compromising with the welfare of self and the loved ones. This gives rise to stress, confusion, doubts, confrontations, frustration, depression and ultimately mental and emotional breakdown. When we read Bhagwad Gita, we condition our mind to perform our duties faithfully without being affected by the surrounding distractions. If we are able to conquer the battle within ourselves, our lives would be far more peaceful and worry free. Thus, to get the solutions of our day-to-day problems, we should read Bhagwad Geeta. To control our minds, we should read Bhagwad Geeta.

Bhagwad Gita helps perform different roles in life

Gita contains various ‘Marga’ or paths of Yoga. These are Karma Yoga (the path of Selfless Action), Bhakti Yoga (the path of Devotion) and Jnana Yoga (the path of Self Transcending Knowledge). If told in simple terms, they are the paths of service, devotion and meditation respectively.

We become Karma Yogi, Bhakti Yogi and Jnana Yogi, all in our this one life. A Karma Yogi when we perform actions for ourselves, others and the Lord. Karma Yoga is essentially doing our work in life as per our ‘dharma’ or duty, without being concerned of results. A Bhakti Yogi when we understand that ‘Love is God and God is Love’. Bhakti yoga is a manifestation of the Divine in everything. It teaches that all else is meaningless, including the Ego. It leads to the path of self realization. As a Jnana Yogi we learn to discriminate between what is real and what is not, what is eternal and what is not. It is the path of knowledge and discrimination, to know the difference between the immortal soul (atman) and the body.

With every age, the verses of Gita carry new meanings. Bhagavad Gita stands tall as its teachings hold true in the present times as they were 5000 years ago. No matter what your dilemma is, you will surely find the right answer in the verses of Bhagavad Gita when you search for what to do in different roles you play in life. And that’s why we should read Bhagwad Gita!
