Vat Savitri Legend
The Vat Savitri story has been narrated in the great Hindu epic Mahabharata. Savitri, the daughter of Aswapati, the king of Madradesa had selected Satyawaan as her husband who was destined to die within a year. Unmoved by anything, Savitri married Satyavan and observed a three day fast before the predicted date of her husband’s death. When Satyavan died after falling from a tree and Yamaraja (the God of Death) came to take his soul, Savitri followed him. On the way, Yamaraja granted her many wishes so that she goes away but got trapped by Savitri with her witty demands. Yamaraja had to give in and he returned back the life of Satyavan.

How to Do Vat Savitri Puja- the Rituals
On the day of Vat Savitri Pooja, the women observing the fast have a bath early in the morning. Then in a basket made of bamboo, they establish the idols of God Brahma and his wife Savitri. In another bamboo basket, they take the idols of Satyavan and Savitri. Both the baskets with idols are kept under the Vatvriksha or Banyan tree. Women then worship them with water, flowers, incense sticks, vermillion or sindoor, roli (sacred red thread), jaggery, bhuna chana (roasted chicpea) etc. They offer water to the Banyan tree. Then they do three parikrama (three rounds of the tree) with a thread in hands that gets tied to the stem of the tree. They take the Vat leaves in hand or wear them as jewelry and listen to the Vat Savitri Katha ( Story of Vat Savitri). After completing the puja, they give some money after keeping it on chana to their mother in law and get blessings from her. They also offer fruits, clothes, money etc. to Brahmins (Priests).
